UFC Event Names - The Truth!

March 26, 2008

ufcsnipes280.jpgAccording to such reliable sources as Dana White, the UFC has a tough time selecting names for UFC events…I beg to differ.

See, it’s not like a crapload of thought goes into these things…the next event is called “UFC 83 - Serra vs St-Pierre 2″…I mean that’s not rocket science is it? Now I have to give credit where credit is due: UFC 2 - No Way Out made sense, and even though it was named after a Costner movie…it fit.

Then that got me thinking…don’t all of these sound a bit like movies? Like bad action movies? Upon further investigation…I discovered that the UFC has been STEALING THEIR SHOW NAMES FROM MOVIES ALL ALONG!

Let’s go through a list of these so-called hard to find names and unearth the plagiaristic truth behind the names of UFC events…It’s shocking how many action classic lend their names to UFC promotions.

(…and you will find NO LESS than THREE Wesley Snipes Movies on the list.)

UFC 2 - No Way Out - 1987 Thriller Starring Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman.

UFC 3 - The American Dream - 1990 Documentary about Jesse Jackson

UFC 6 - Clash of the Titans - 1981 action adventure with Lawrence Olivier

UFC 14 - Showdown - 1990 action adventure starring Werner Hoetzinger

UFC 15 - Collision Course - 1989 action comedy with Mr. Miyagi and Jay Leno

UFC 19 -Ultimate Young Guns - OK so they added “ultimate” in front of it, but c’mon, you know what they were thinking about - Charlie Sheen, Lou Diamond Philips and his posse back in 1990.

UFC 28 - High Stakes - 1989 Kathy Bates thriller

UFC 34 - High Voltage - 1997 Antonio Sabato Jr action flick

UFC 36 - Worlds Collide - 1951 Sci Fi Thriller

UFC 37 - High Impact - Not a movie…but a 1996 Nash Bridges episode!

UFC 42 - Sudden Impact - Dirty effing Harry…1983

UFC 43 - Meltdown - At least this one had a martial artist in it, Jet Li in 1995

UFC 44 - Undisputed - 2002…Wesley frickin Snipes!

UFC 45 - Revolution - Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland

UFC 48 - Payback - 1999, Mel Gibson action comedy and crime! Meh.

UFC 49 - Unfinished Business - 1984 Canadian Drama

UFC 54 - Boiling Point - Wesley Friggin Snipes in 1993

Thats TWO Snipes, one Jet Li, a Dirty Harry and Mr Miyagi so far…

UFC 55 - Fury - 1936 Acadamy Award nominated drama.

UFC 59 - Reality Check - 2002 Horror

I’m getting tired, and these movies are getting shittier.

UFC 64 - Unstoppable - 2004, WESLEY GODDAMN SNIPES!

UFC 65 - Bad Intentions - 2000…porn

UFC 68 - The Uprising - 2001 Hank Azaria TV movie Drama…thank god not porn.

UFC 69 - Shootout - Gregory Peck western from 1971.

UFC 73 -Stacked - Pamela Anderson comedy. The movies promo tag line? “She Sells Books. Like You Care.”

UFC 79 - Nemesis - 1993 Cyborg action thriller.

UFC 80 - Rapid Fire - 1993, Brandon Lee. Fuck Yeah.

UFC 81 - Breaking Point - In 1993, there wasn’t much cooler…or drunker…than Gary Busey.

Final tally? Well on the upside we got 3 Snipes, a Miyagi, Jet Li, Dirty Harry, Pacino, Brandon lee and a wine stoned Gary Busey.

We missed out on a few, Antonio Sabato Jr. really screwed up the whole list, and a post 2002 Pamela Anderson is getting out of hand…toss in a fine Canadian Drama and shit guys, why not just go for broke? Why beat around the bush?

Heres a list of unused Jean Claude Van Damme movie titles to choose from for the next few UFC events:

UFC 90 - Derailed - For when the Xyience lawsuit blows up.
UFC 95 - Knock Off - For the debut of their Affliction clothing replacement sponsor
UFC 97 - Double Team - When they have to have a main event with two guys taking on Anderson Silva to finally beat him.
UFC 108 - Street Fighter - It’s simply poetic.
UFC 111 - Nowhere to Run - For the event when all the fighters return to the UFC after getting screwed even more by other promotions.
UFC 115 - Hard Target - Debut of the UFC Featherweight class
UFC 125 - No Retreat, No Surrender - The name of the event right after Dana White goes into hiding from the authorities when Zuffa is found guilty of the Xyience shady dealings, and runs the business from exile.

And finally, why the hell has there not been a UFC event called Bloodsport? A damn shame, thats what that is.

‘Dances with Wolves’, Octa-pussy, and Karate Kid would all be extreme names.
